Your Mountain Bike Journey: Ride It Your Way
First up: Just ride
Your first goal is to feel comfortable on two wheels.
You might ride easy trails. You might walk sections. Every ride is teaching you something.
And eventually, you'll notice something amazing.
You're not thinking about the bike anymore. You're just riding it.
Then comes the "Ooooh… I want to try that" stage
Once you're feeling a little more confident, curiosity usually kicks in.
You see someone roll over a rocky section and think:
"Maybe I could do that."
You see a corner and realise you can take it faster.
You ride a trail that used to feel terrifying and suddenly think:
"Was THAT the scary bit?"
This is where progression gets fun.
You start learning new skills. You ride different trails. You get better. And every little win feels HUGE.
The next level… if you want it
Maybe you start thinking: "What's next?"
A harder trail?
A steeper descent?
A rock garden?
A drop?
A jump?
There is something brilliant about pushing yourself just outside your comfort zone and discovering that you can do something you couldn't do before.
But here's the big BUT… You don't have to.
You don't need to chase the next grade
Mountain biking can sometimes feel like there's a progression checklist we're all supposed to follow.
Green → Blue → Black → Bigger → Faster → Scarier. Throw the checklist away.
If you enjoy riding green trails, ride green trails. If blue trails are your happy place, stay there.
If you have absolutely zero interest in launching yourself off a jump, don't.
And nobody gets a trophy for being the most terrified person!
Progress doesn't always look impressive
Here's the thing about progression:
Sometimes it looks like riding something harder.
But sometimes it looks like riding the same thing better.
Maybe you used to tense up on a descent, and now you're relaxed.
Maybe you used to slam the brakes, and now you're controlling your speed.
Maybe you used to stare at the obstacle directly in front of your wheel, and now you're looking down the trail.
Maybe you finally nail that corner you've been struggling with.
Maybe you simply feel more confident.
That's progress too.
And honestly, becoming a more confident rider can be way more valuable than simply ticking off harder trail grades.
Know the difference between challenge and pressure
There's a really good kind of nervousness in mountain biking.
It's the: "I'm nervous… but I really want to try this."
Listen to that feeling.
Then there's the: "I absolutely do not want to do this, but everyone else is going, so I guess I have to."
Listen to that one too. It's saying NOPE, or NOT TODAY!
You don't have anything to prove.
Your comfort zone is allowed to be your happy place
We spend a lot of time being told to get outside our comfort zone.
And sometimes that's great advice.
But your comfort zone isn't a place you have to escape from.
It can be somewhere you enjoy.
Maybe your favourite ride is a cruisy trail with your mates, a few laughs, some spectacular scenery and a coffee afterwards.
Maybe you love flowing trails but aren't interested in technical riding.
Maybe you're happy riding the same local loop every weekend.
That's not failure.
That's not "not progressing".
That's knowing what you enjoy. And isn't that the whole point?
So where should you go next?
Wherever you want.
Push yourself if you're excited to learn something new.
Take a skills course.
Try a new trail.
Ride with someone who inspires you.
Celebrate the little wins.
Or stay exactly where you are because you're having an absolute blast.
You don't have to ride harder to be a better mountain biker.
You just have to keep riding.
Ride your ride. Find your fun. And do it your way.
That's what being a Trail Queen is all about.
